Dorset Loves Arts - Launch Events PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 August 2010
Volunteer performers / workshop leaders wanted!

Dorset Loves Arts online call for volunteer performers / workshop leaders for the Dorset Loves Arts launch event in September!

Dorset Loves Arts is looking for local artists / groups with all types of performance and workshop skills to perform or lead a workshop as part of the Dorset Loves Arts launch event on the 4th September at Weymouth Old TownHall. There will be a range of different activities taking place throughout the day overthree different spaces (one outdoor) at Weymouth Town Hall and selected artists will be allocated a relevant time slot and a space. Weymouth Town Hall does have a PA system which is available to use as well as some other facilities which can bediscussed. There is no fee for this event nor can we cover travel, materials or otherexpenses for the day, but this is a great opportunity to showcase your work to members of the press, venue representatives, other artists and the general public and of course be part of a huge regional campaign aiming to increase engagement in the arts in Dorset.  Submissions will be accepted from all realms of the arts; theatre, visual arts and installation), crafts, various aspects of site specific performance, spoken word, dance, circus, film, music and celebratory theatre.

If you are interested in this opportunity then please e-mail Lucy Nile This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with a maximum one page expression of interest detailing what you would like to do on the day, a current C.V. and any online links to examples of your work.

Please note that anyone interest in delivering a workshop must have an up to date CRB certificate.
You will need to be available on Saturday 4th September for the launch and possibly the day before. Submission deadline Monday 23rd August 12pm.

***Dorset Loves Arts is a campaign to raise awareness of the rich variety of arts and culture on offer in our County. The campaign was launched in September 2009 and aims to increase engagement in the arts. You might enjoy watching a play, or perform with an amateur dramatics society. Maybe you write poetry, maybe you belong to a book club. Perhaps you paint, perhaps you enjoy embroidery. Or do you dance, or DJ in a club? If it’s creative, it counts! The Dorset Strategic Partnership believes that increasing attendance and participation in the arts is important for enhancing people’s quality of life and should form part of how the performance of the partnership is rated by national government. National Indicator 11 (NI11) ‘Engagement in the Arts’ has been written into Dorset’s Local Area Agreement, and there is now a drive to increase the number of people attending or participating in arts by 3% by December 2010. If we achieve this challenge and find that by working together we attract more people to arts events, we will place Dorset firmly on the UK cultural map.

To make the most of this opportunity, arts organisations in Dorset have come together under one umbrella. We are passionate about the arts – and want the public to be, too! We believe that engagement and participation in the arts can really enhance people’s quality of life.

NEW WEB-SITE - Dorset Loves Arts PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 July 2010

NEW WEBSITE PUTS THE ARTS IN THEIR DORSET PLACE

www.dorsetlovesarts.org

Dorset, one of the artiest counties in the UK, has a new, free website uniting all the amateur and professional arts organisations for the first time.

www.dorsetlovesarts.org is inviting groups and organisations, amateur and professional to list their events and activities. The website went live in June and already we have 100's of organisations participating.

Home to the largest arts centre outside London, the largest open studios event, an international symphony orchestra and thousands of amateur and professional arts groups, Dorset is an inspiring place to live and work. With more people working in the creative industries than in fishing or farming, culture in the county is not simply as a leisure pursuit but also a vital economic driver.

www.dorsetlovesarts.org is a free website, supported by Creative Dorset, which has been created by a coalition of arts organisations who have never collaborated in this way before.

Says Dominic Tambling, Director of Creative Dorset "Culture is important in Dorset. Whether it's listening to a symphony concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, enjoying an Artsreach event in your local village hall, or borrowing a DVD from the library, there's plenty on offer. Culture makes life more enjoyable and helps us make sense of our lives. Our beautiful environment is home to thousands of professional artists, musicians, writers and performers. Thousands more of us are involved with amateur or voluntary cultural activities such as reading groups, photography clubs or choirs.  Living in a beautiful place inspires. Culture springs from our natural environment. It provides a space for reflection or a chance to step away from everyday worries."

Skillset - Creative Media Workforce and Employer Surveys PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 28 May 2010

Skillset has launched its 2010 Creative Media Workforce and Employer Surveys.

These surveys will generate vital information on the shape of the UK's Creative Industries workforce. This in turn will influence public investment to support growth in those industries.

The more information we gather - especially at a South West regional level - the more accurately we can direct funds to meet the real current and emerging needs of the industry.

It would be fantastic if you could take the time to fill out the survey here: http://www.skillset.org/research/activity/workforce/article_7741_1.asp

www.dorsethalls.net is a new website, launched earlier this year by Dorset Community Action and the Dorset Village Halls Association, dedicated to Dorset's village and community halls. NHS Dorset Arts & Mental Health Strategy

ART TASTER SESSIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO USE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Brief for Artists - Introduction

NHS Dorset has commissioned an arts strategy as part of a capital project for a new facility at 30 Maiden Castle Road in Dorchester. The strategy aims to involve people who use mental health services in the delivery of the strategy and in the development of artwork for the new facility. The overall theme of the project is ‘Growing Nature'. There will be a number of opportunities for artists within the strategy including some large scale public art commissions. Artists for the large commissions will be recruited via open submission in June/July. This brief is for artists for taster sessions which we are offering in June. Applying for the taster sessions does not preclude you from applying for the large commissions when they are advertised.
If you would like a copy of the strategy please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

TASTER SESSIONS

We are planning three ‘taster sessions' to engage participants and provide us with an opportunity to get feedback on the way we involve people. The aims of the taster sessions are to:

  • Provide participants with a positive and creative experience
  • Identify potential barriers to participation and practical challenges
  • Link the main participating organisations in joint delivery
  • Identify individuals who would be interested in getting more involved as the projects develop and the full strategy is delivered
  • Introduce the evaluation process
  • Raise awareness with staff and engage them in the process

Participants: The sessions will be open to anyone who uses mental health services and advertised through units and organisations in Dorchester and Bridport. Numbers may vary but a maximum number will be agreed with the artists.

Artform: Each of the taster sessions focuses on a different artform: Photography, 3 Dimensional work & 2 Dimensional work.

Support for artists: At each session the artist will be supported by a mental health support worker or therapist. Artists will also attend a preparatory session prior to delivering their workshop, with art therapist, Lesley Moore.

Session 1. Whitfield Activity Centre, Dorchester
Date & Time of workshop: Thursday June 17th 10am
Artform: Photography

Session 2. Forston Clinic
Date & Time of workshop: Thursday June 24th 10am
Artform
: 3D

Session 3. The Gallery, Durngate St

Date & Time of workshop: Thursday July 1st 10am

FEES :  Artists will be paid £300 for a workshop to include the half hour training session and travel. There will be additional funds available for materials.
